Our wallpaper in the kitchen was yellow gingham - big checks. The carpets were also gold along with the fixtures in the bathroom. Ahhh ~ the memories of it all. So it is of no surprise that I tend to veer away from that spectrum of the color wheel altogether.
I do have some yellow in my house now but it is more muted ~ a soft butter yellow in the kitchen which was actually called castle cream on the paint chip.

When we do sell here and build our new place, we will be decorating our rec room in a fire theme for my resident fireman and would love to put a gold on the walls, we will have to see.
One place I do not mind a touch of yellow to cheer things up is in my flowers. Driving home last week-end I had to pull over when I saw this:
I love it when He sends us things like this to make us smile.

It is so funny because my favorite color is yellow, but I wouldn't necessarily put a ton of it in my house. I remember my grandparents house being the same way you are describing, in fact, they probably had those washers!
