The Women that Made Me ~ Grammy Stiles

This is my maternal grandmother
Barbara

but I called her Grammy

most of my memories of her are childhood memories
as she went into a nursing home while I was in my teens
and passed away when I was in my 20's
she had alzheimer's disease

The farm ~ glory days

it was she that lived on the farm
this is the grandmother that baked bread every week

made each one of her grandchildren a quilt

I received hand made cotton nighties for my birthday
and cozy flannel ones for Christmas

I remember her baking ~ she was always cooking something
her house was spotless

we would play upstairs in the kitchen chamber in the old clothes
on the weekend

tip toe around the beans drying on the newspapers
smell the dill drying
or try to creep down the steep steps to the kitchen
although we were told to stay off them

can you find her ~ yeah the arrow helps
but when Gina and I found this picture a couple of years ago
I got a little spooked

it was like ~ that's me!  scary real

birds eye view of the farm

Years later while I was researching our family tree
I was gifted with her journals
they have important dates jotted in them
the birth of a baby
and the passing of a dear friend or relative

what resonated with me when I read them
was that this woman lived for the weekends
when the kids would arrive with grandchildren in tow

although her weeks were filled with keeping house
and the farm chores
card parties and the occasional party line gossip
it was family that mattered

I love this old shot ~ a gathering
there was always room for more
and when it is out by the apple tree
more than likely two or three

this was taken the Christmas before she went into the home
although she and Grampy had moved into an apartment
it was becoming harder and harder for him to take care of her

so here I am a flanked by two of the most important
women in my life

sometimes I wonder what would have happened if she had been healthy
and lived longer ~ I think we would have gotten along...

In the Kitchen ~ Wrapup

I am pleased to say that although it took me more than
28 days to complete my cooking challenge
I finally completed it last weekend

my total list includes:

Vegetable & Pasta soup
Slow cooker rolls
Basil Pesto crescents
Dump cake
Chicken enchilada pasta
Cherry morning rolls
Breakfast casserole
Buffalo mac & cheese
Rolo cookies
Chicken pesto flatbread
Bacon double cheeseburger dip
Blueberry oatmeal muffins
Pesto alfredo shrimp pasta
Creole tuna
Italian meatballs
Monkey bread
Chicken tortilla soup
Snickerdoodles
Lemon blueberry lemon bread
Peach & cherry crumble

Some of our favourites included:

these became a new favourite cookie
although they take a bit more prep than your normal everyday cookie
they are worth the extra time and effort

this cake was so so good ~ I really cannot tell you how much we enjoyed it
even after it ran over in the oven
set off the smoke detector and forced me to open the windows
on a sub zero degree with the wind chill day

I made it as a layer cake but it would be great in a 9x13 slab
or a bundt pan

these were good and I would make them again
they would be great for a dinner party ~ they were just enough

I was so proud of myself as I made my own pastry as well as the tarts
and these will be made again as I cannot believe it took me this long
to make them the first time around

I have had this many times but never made it myself
as it is a classic Acadian meat pie

although I liked this soup
Trevor was not a fan so this will not be made again
unless I am taking it out of the house!

I have had this recipe pinned for over a year
and I finally made them and loved them

these are a new favourite
and will accompany my next pot of soup, stew or chilli

who am I kidding ~ I will make them to go with just about anything!

Looking back over my list I did more baking than meal items
even though I said that I was not a baker!

All the recipes can be found on my Pinterest feed

and I want to give a shout out to Simone for starting this
and being the best cheerleader a girl could ask for

I had so much fun doing this
and plan to do again

Hope you had a great weekend!

Friday Potpourri

Oh daylight savings time
I certainly have a love/hate relationship with you

via

although I love that you share your light with me
at the end of my work day

going to sleep at night and getting up in the morning
are both challenges I could do without

it still amazes me how one hour
can throw your internal clock off so much

finally Friday and I am just getting into a groove now

via

via

this is where I want to be today
curled up in this chair with my latest read
and a pot of tea with honey
I need some relaxation time

instead I am off to work for one more day
then the weekend ~ oh glorious weekend

via

via

tomorrow night we will head next door
to the bestneighborsever for dinner

then we will have game night
and maybe a pint or two of green beer
to celebrate St. Patty's Day

via

shopping on the agenda for a baby shower gift

trying another new recipe or two

paint sample picking

purging ~ cleaning

and looking for a drywall person
those guys are busy!!

wishing you a wonderful weekend

hope you find the pot of gold
at the end of the rainbow!

The Women that Made Me ~ Grammy Brown

This is my Gram  ~ Vera

not Grandmother or Nanna or Granny

to us she was simply Gram
or Grammy Brown to most that knew her

I grew up with this lady
like having 2 Mom's in your house ~ which is not always easy
but as I got older ~ I did appreciate how much richer my life was
because of it.

My Mom worked and Gram took care of us
until we were old enough to take care of ourselves after school
and she got a job working at the corner store

I remember staying up with her when she got home
as she worked until 11

we would watch the soap Santa Barbara together
as it came on at midnight
then head to bed when it was over ~ good times
this is the woman who taught me how to knit
it was slow going ~ I had a hard time with a scarf
but she stayed with me and I stuck with it

she loved making the recipes that her Mom used to make
and told me stories about her parents
coming over from England ~ their journeys through life

she was old school with her cooking though
cooked the crap out of everything
she could make broccoli grey ~ not green ~ grey
and we would tease her about it

she was a huge part of my life and my heart broke in two
when she passed away

when I made her butter tart recipe during my recent challenge
Mom said to me ~ "Gram would be proud"

I hope so....

Memory Lane

As I was going through pictures last weekend
for my new series
it was like taking a stroll down memory lane

the pictures are plentiful
and although I could have sat and scanned each one of them
to save them for eternity
I scanned in a few of my favourites
and thought I would share them here with you

this is my Grampy
I am thinking it was taken in the 50's at the farm
and I absolutely love it

flash forward 30 years or so
a typical Saturday night at the farm

rewind again to 1969
there were only 5 grandchildren that summer
with 2 more to come along in August

that's me in the back
the little blondie

we now total 12

Christmas 1969
my brother's first Christmas
that is him and I on the end

taken the same Christmas
I think this is my favourite family photo
through the years

I chuckled when I found this one
it seems everyone has a pen squiggle except for me
do you think I had issues with my cousins when I was younger?

cosmos at the farm
this is why I love them so....

The weekend was full of cooking and cribbage
as Mom was over for a visit and supper on Saturday night

Sunday was a lazy day
made some chicken stock for fricot
and snuggled in on the couch
for some me time

hope your weekend was all you wanted it to be

xo

Friday Potpourri

Hello Friday
I have been waiting for you
all week long...

work is going better ~ starting to find my niche
accepting the change ~ giving it time
we will see

I still have 3 recipes left to make for my challenge
time got away from me
but it was for fun and I think I did pretty well

I will do a recap of our favourites soon

thank you for all the comments this week
both on my DYI project
and my new series

I am so excited to share this series with you
introduce you to the women who have influenced me
and made me the person I am today

this weekend we will do some more reno work
I am looking at paint colours
and started a pin board with what I want on the walls

I have a vision and a budget
and I see a visit to the fabric store in my future

this is tickling my fancy right now
what do you think??
yellow walls?

wishing you a wonderful weekend
full of smiles and laughter
and sunshine ~ hoping for sunshine...
